At the outbreak of the Caucasus war, two wounded Russian soldiers are taken to a mountain village by an old Chechen, Abdul-Murat, who expects to exchange the two prisoners for his son, who was captured by the Russian army. The exchange can no longer take place because the son of Abdul has been killed during an attempt to escape from prison.

Set in 1702, a young samurai, Aoki Sozaemon, arrives at Edo (now Tokyo) from the rural Matsumoto to avenge his father's death. Sozaemon looks for the enemy of his father throughout Edo, but is rather reluctant to fulfil his mission. His stay in a district of Edo, plagued by poverty, but rich in human relations, makes Sozaemon start to appreciate life and to question the sense of revenge.
